青春幹大事

Jeune Juliette

JEUNE JULIETTE (CANADA/2019/COMEDY/DRAMA)

Young Juliette (English title)

Language: French, Canadian

Blurb

In this bubbly teenage drama, Juliette is a high school sophomore who has big dreams about friends, love and family. However, as each dream fails to materialise despite her best efforts, she learns to let go and find peace with who she really is.

Synopsis

Meet Juliette, a high school sophomore. Juliette is a heavy girl; she’s also bold, funny, slightly scheming and totally endearing. It’s the hectic last few weeks before summer vacation, and Juliette is about to learn some big lessons about boys, love, and friendship. She’ll even do some growing up—but not too much.

Synopsis

Fourteen-year old Juliette lives in the country with her father and her older brother. When Juliette was younger, her mother left the family to pursue her career in New York; from that moment, Juliette started to gain weight. Today, she’s not obese, but she’s clearly the heaviest girl at her high school. But that doesn’t stop her from being vivacious, funny and unrepentantly rebellious. Juliette has big dreams: she wants to throw the best parties, move to New York to live with her mother, and date the most gorgeous guy in her school, an older boy who is about to graduate. In short, she wants everything she can’t have—which sometimes makes her forget to appreciate those who really love her. We follow this brazen and endearing girl during her hectic last few weeks before summer vacation, and watch as she does some growing up—but not too much.

Synopsis

In this feel-good comedy from Québec about a self-confident teenage girl, eveything’s a little bit over the top. 14-year old Juliette is red-haired, fat and has big dreams: she wants to throw the best parties, move to New York to live with her mum and go out with the coolest guy in the school. In a word: she wants everything she can’t have. And she’s not going to let a little thing like reality get in the way – and plunges with abandon into the last few weeks before the summer holidays.

Synopsis

Fourteen-year-old Juliette lives with her single father and older brother in a Quebec suburb. She is a bright, vivacious and rebellious girl despite suffering occasional mockery by her classmates for being overweight. Juliette is determined to spread her wings and fly away from her dull and tedious entourage, but cannot refrain from indulging in far-fetched dreams, totally out of her league. We follow her as she embarks on a coming-of-age journey, set in the hectic last few weeks before summer vacation. A cynicism-free yet utterly endearing tale of teenage malaise.

Synopsis

Juliette (Alexane Jamieson), age 14, is insolent, malicious, and a bit of a liar, not a profile that will win a popularity contest at school. She has few friends. But it’s her chubbiness that makes her the butt of cruel bullying. She acts as if she couldn’t care less – after all, she thinks her schoolmates are a bunch of losers. Toward the end of the school year, events start shaking up her ideas about love, friendship and family.

Acclaimed Quebec director-screenwriter Anne Emond creates a searing dramatic comedy, a poetic, sensitive and somewhat autobiographical portrait of the hidden anxieties of adolescence, the uncertainty of the future.

About the film:

  • The story is inspired by my experience at her age. I have a lot of similarities with Juliette. I was lonely and dreamy, fat with thirty pounds more than today..
  • Young Juliet is a bit like rewriting history and reinventing it while creating an inspiring character for others.
  • A semi-autobiographical coming of age story inspired by Émond's own teenage experiences. Wikipedia

  • Jeune Juliette is an absolutely delightful and body positive teen comedy about 14-year-old Juliette, a smart and savvy outsider who is coming to terms with her own identity and how people treat her because she is plump. Seventh Row (Rotten Tomatoes)
